Conventional Braces vs Self-Ligating Braces
Compare conventional braces vs self ligating: elastic ties or a clip, visits, cleaning, appearance, and cost factors. Questions for an orthodontist.
Published Updated 7 min read
The short version
- Conventional braces hold the archwire with elastic or wire ties. Self-ligating brackets hold it with a built-in clip or door.
- A different bracket is not a promise of fewer visits, less discomfort, or a lower fee. The orthodontist sets the plan after an examination.
- Both systems stay on the teeth and still need careful cleaning around brackets and wires.
- Ask for a written quotation in Malaysian ringgit that shows what the bracket choice changes, and what stays the same.
This page is general information, not medical advice — consult a registered practitioner.
Conventional braces vs self ligating is a comparison of how a fixed brace holds the archwire, not a ranking of which smile is better. Both are fixed braces. A registered dentist or orthodontic provider has to examine the bite before either one is a sensible choice. This page goes deeper on that one difference. For metal, ceramic, lingual, and aligner options side by side, start with Braces options compared.
How the archwire is held
Fixed braces use brackets on the teeth and an archwire that guides movement. The American Association of Orthodontists describes traditional braces as brackets and wires that put pressure on the teeth over time, with elastic bands sometimes added for extra force. The same page describes self-ligating braces as brackets with built-in clips or doors that hold the wire.
On a conventional bracket, a small elastic tie or a thin wire tie wraps over the archwire and keeps it in the slot. Those ties are changed when the clinic adjusts the brace. Elastic ties can be clear, silver-coloured, or a colour the patient chooses. The tie is a separate piece. It can loosen, stain, or collect food, and the clinic replaces it at a review.
On a self-ligating bracket, the slot has its own clip, gate, or door. The clinician opens it, seats the archwire, and closes it. There is no elastic tie around that bracket. The American Association of Orthodontists says these brackets can be metal, such as stainless steel, or ceramic. The clip is part of the bracket, so a damaged clip is a bracket problem, not a tie that can simply be swapped for a new elastic.
Elastic bands between the upper and lower teeth can still be part of either plan. A clip does not remove those bands when the bite needs them. Ask which part of the appliance is the bracket design, and which part is the tooth movement the plan requires.
What changes at an adjustment visit
A review visit is when the orthodontic team checks movement and changes the appliance. With conventional braces, that often includes removing old ties, changing or reshaping the archwire, and placing new ties. With self-ligating braces, the team opens the clips, changes the wire if needed, and closes the clips. The American Association of Orthodontists says self-ligating brackets generally allow a longer time between appointments. Treat that as the association’s general description. It is not a promise that your reviews will be fewer, shorter, or easier.
Ask the clinic to write down the review interval it expects for your case with the bracket it recommends, and whether that interval would differ if you chose the other bracket. Also ask who you call if a tie snaps, a clip will not close, or a wire end is sharp before the next visit. Both systems can have broken parts. A longer gap between routine visits does not mean you should wait if something is loose or cutting the cheek.
Missed visits, broken brackets, and poor cleaning can change the plan whatever the clip design. If a clinic says one bracket always means fewer visits or a shorter treatment, ask them to explain that claim against your own records, not against a brochure.
Cleaning around ties and clips
Both appliances stay on the teeth while you eat and sleep. You cannot take them out to brush. Food and plaque collect around brackets and under the wire. Conventional elastic ties add another small surface that can stain and hold debris. A closed clip has fewer elastic edges, but the bracket is still a ledge, and the wire still crosses the tooth.
Daily cleaning is still brushing with a fluoride toothpaste and cleaning between the teeth in the way the clinic shows you. Many patients are shown an interdental brush for the space under the wire. The clinic should demonstrate this on your own brace. A water flosser, if the clinic suggests one, does not replace that demonstration.
Tell the clinician if your gums bleed or if a tie or clip edge catches floss. Bleeding needs a closer look from the clinic. It is not something this page can interpret. Ask whether you should keep seeing a general dentist for checkups and scaling while the brace is on.
Appearance in daily life
Conventional metal braces are the most familiar look: silver brackets, a wire, and ties that can be colourful. Clear or tooth-coloured ties are less bright, and they can stain from food and drink, so ask how often they are changed. Self-ligating metal brackets are still visible on the front of the teeth. They simply do not have the coloured elastic ring. Ceramic or tooth-coloured self-ligating brackets are less obvious from a short distance, and they can still chip or stain at the edges. The American Association of Orthodontists notes that ceramic self-ligating brackets are often chosen because they are more discreet.
Speech, cheek irritation, and pressure in the first few days can happen with either brace. Orthodontic wax is a common temporary cover for a sharp spot. Ask for it at the fitting, and ask when a sharp spot needs a visit instead of wax. Neither bracket is invisible. If hiding the appliance is the main goal, that is a different conversation about ceramic brackets, lingual braces, or aligners, which Braces options compared sets out.
Cost factors, in general terms
There is no single Malaysian price for conventional or self-ligating braces. The American Association of Orthodontists says orthodontic cost varies with the type of treatment, its complexity, and its duration. A bracket with a clip can be listed at a different fee from a bracket that uses ties. The label alone does not tell you which quotation is lower once records, repairs, removal, and retainers are included.
Ask for an itemised quotation in Malaysian ringgit and check what it includes:
- examination and diagnostic records;
- the brackets and wires themselves, and whether ceramic versions cost more;
- routine adjustment visits, and whether a longer interval changes the fee;
- replacement of lost ties, broken clips, or detached brackets;
- removal of the brace;
- retainers and reviews after the brace comes off.
Two clinics can recommend the same bracket and still differ because one includes retainers and minor repairs and the other bills them later. Compare the written scope. A lower starting figure for a self-ligating bracket is not automatically the smaller total. A higher fee for conventional braces is not automatically the more complete plan.
Also ask whether the quotation changes if the plan later needs extractions, elastic bands, or a referral for gum care. Those items sit outside the clip-versus-tie choice, and they still affect what you pay.
What to ask an orthodontist
Take the same questions to each consultation so the answers are comparable. Clinics that list this work sit under Braces and Orthodontics. Ask whether the dentist is registered with the Malaysian Dental Council, and who will actually adjust the brace.
- What is the brace meant to change in my bite, and what did the examination show?
- Why do you recommend this bracket rather than the other way of holding the wire?
- Will the brackets be metal or tooth-coloured, and may I see a sample?
- How often would reviews be, and what do you do at each visit?
- What should I do if a tie, clip, or wire breaks between visits?
- How do I clean around the bracket you are proposing?
- What is the full fee in ringgit, and which repairs and retainers are included?
- What happens if tooth movement is slower than the plan, or if gum health needs attention first?
A clear plan names the problem, the appliance, the review rhythm, and the fee. A slogan about speed or comfort is not a plan.
This comparison is only the tie-versus-clip question. It does not choose a clinic for you, and it does not say that one bracket will finish sooner or feel easier. Book an examination, compare the written quotations, and confirm retainers before treatment starts.

Common questions
Do self-ligating braces mean fewer appointments?
The American Association of Orthodontists describes self-ligating brackets as generally allowing a longer time between appointments. That is a general description, not a schedule for your teeth. Ask the orthodontist how often you would be reviewed with each option, and what happens if a wire, clip, or bracket needs attention between visits.
Are self-ligating braces less noticeable than conventional braces?
Visibility depends on the material, not only on the clip. Both systems can use metal or tooth-coloured brackets. Conventional braces can also use coloured elastic ties, which self-ligating brackets do not need. Ask to see the bracket the clinic would use.
Can an adult ask about conventional braces vs self ligating?
Adults can discuss either bracket with a registered dentist or orthodontic provider. Suitability depends on the bite, gum health, existing dental work, and the movements the plan needs. This page cannot tell you which system fits you.
